Just in case..... NO SPOLIERS PLEASE!

Any spoilers will be promptly deleted.

OT: I'm very excited for ME3, I had barrels of fun in ME2, I'm currently my second play through. I made some...mistakes the first time.

I wasn't referring to your post. I was referring to others who may post in this thread, as it is currently the only ME3 discussion.

I heard about this and i would be gustaing as well if i didn't have the same mindset as TB and think this is appalling behaviour from EA/Bioware for charging an extra $10/£8/800ms points for access to a Prothean squad member is something they shouldn't think is a smart thing to do.

Well I for one won't be buying mass effect 3. imho mass effect 2 was a major let down from the high standards of the original and bioware just seems to be getting further and further away from what made them such a great developer.

its not an official news post invun its a forum thread. 60% of the time those are wrong. plus the sound files we have seem to point towards him being a squad member.

An interesting theory, but I doubt it heavily.
Spoiler! :
However, because I'd heard the term "indoctrination theory" somewhere, I went through the game expecting what would've been a massively ballsy ending on the part of Bioware. That is to say, I expected in the end the whole thing would end in, despite everything, Shepard finally succumbing to indoctrination and the mission failing, for the cycles must always continue.

I recognise that "indoctrination theory" goes along those lines, but I consider it mostly a fan's attempt to rewrite the ending in a way that they prefer to the Catalyst's way of things.

I doubt the Indoctrination Theory. Bioware has stated that, in the Extended cut DLC there will be no change to the existing ending, only more "Context and closure" (Oh, joy).

Official quote from Bioware PAX panel: [The indoctrination theory] ""illustrates how committed the [Mass Effect] fanbase is,” but said that while “fans will interpret it in their own way”, they didn’t want to comment either way for fear of being “prescriptive”."

The ending did not amuse me, for a multitude to reasons I can't be asked to type out.

"Get"?
Spoiler! :
If I had simply been given an ending, the argument about it all would probably be even stronger than it already is.

I assume you mean what choice I made (if more subtlety had been employed in the presentation of said choice this whole debacle would probably have been minimised. The issue seems to be everything boiling down to starkly presented choices and this prevailing idea that we need to find out what became of all the choices we made throughout the series, which really seems to me like it will ruin the mood with reams of exposition. The only regret I had was that the series was coming to an end - most issues were already given closure during normal gameplay. As a result, the extended DLC, if it is only going to address this latter "issue", will simply make a controversial ending boring. Better to end with a bang than a fizzle).

I chose synthesis.

My phrasing left something to be desired.
Spoiler! :
My problem with the ending is the circular logic and Deus Ex Machina (Or, depending on how you look at it, Diabolo Ex Machina), not to mention the plot holes. I won't go into any further depth on the matter here, though.

I chose destruction.

I certainly understand those issues.
Spoiler! :
By Deus Ex Machina do you mean the Crucible or the Catalyst? Or possibly both? Concerning the Crucible, I'd sort've already prepared for something along its lines since I couldn't think of much else that would stop the reapers. Whilst it wasn't unexpected to me when the term "superweapon" was first mentioned, I can see how that would be disappointing.

The Catalyst itself though, and its logic, are probably the biggest "lolwut" moment in the ending.

What I wonder is how planned such an idea as the Catalyst and its purpose was. I can't help but feel like Bioware wrote themselves into a corner, especially with such horribly refutable logic coming from the apparent creator of the reapers (who Shepard seems very affable towards despite it being a designer of mass genocide) concerning organic/synthetic inability to cooperate which, if we were good Shepards, we've already disproved on a small (EDI) and large (Quarians/Geth) scale. So much for unfathomably large intelligence. To be fair, it does recognise that the current solution (Scumbag Catalyst: "Destroy organic life with synthetics so that synthetics won't destroy organic life.") is no longer tenable, which partly implies knowledge that you've disproved it, but to be acting on such a basis for untold millennia only to be disproved by a marine, it does make you wonder.

There's also the fact that we've essentially had what might as well be God thrown at us (the lack of explanation apart from "I exist" is reminiscent of God), making the Catalyst an incredibly literal Deus Ex Machina. It's an interesting idea, but doesn't really make for the best of conclusions, especially since there is little forewarning apart from your short conversation with the Prothean VI.

Essentially, it gives me the idea that they weren't sure how best to end the series, and finally went with that. If however the Catalyst had been planned long beforehand (doubtful, since the series changed lead writers), I would be very surprised. It does not seem intricately planned as a plot point.

That's probably why the "Indoctrination Theory" has been put forward. It overwrites the Catalyst because whoever thought of the theory didn't like it. Bioware has claimed it doesn't wish to be "prescriptive", which I take means: "Sure, you can think this is true, because people who didn't like the ending will choose this and stop bothering us."

Heh, at this rate there would've been less controversy if Bioware had simply ended the game at the point where Shepard collapses trying to reach the control panel. The resolution of the conflict with the Illusive Man and the part between Shepard and Anderson were absolutely wonderful.
