Building a computer

Hi everybody. Some of you may know that I bought a new computer around September of last year from a guy on craigslist who builds and sells gaming computers regularly. I've had no problems with it, but I'm not particularly knowledgeable on computer parts and I'm planning on building another (practically from the ground up) sometime soon. So, I have a few questions.
Here are my current specs:
Computer - ACPI x64-based PC
GPU - NVidia GeForce GTX 460
Processor(s) - AMD Phenom II X4 955 (there are four of them listed, not sure what that means lol)
Disk drive - WDC WD7500AYYS-01RCA0 ATA Device (lol wat)
Hard drive - 700GB, not sure what it is.
RAM - Forgot to mention this, it's currently 2x4GB for a total of 8GB. I don't know if I'll ever need more than that.
I don't think this setup is really adequate by current standards, so I'd like to know what I can do to improve it (other than replacing the obviously-outdated GPU). Whatever I take out of this computer will likely be used in the building of the new one - this is more about improving my current computer than building one better than it. When I'm done, I hope the new computer will run about as well as this one currently does, while the new one performs better. If that makes any sense whatsoever.
So, I hope you guys have some suggestions for me. If you need more info about the current setup, let me know and I'll try to find it.
Edit: I was also hoping you guys had some advice for keyboards, mice, speakers, and monitors that are ideal for gaming. The ones I have now are so pathetic they're not really worth mentioning.
