Old thread - Latest Maps

It's old but gold. If it could help you out we've probably chucked it in here.

Old thread - Latest Maps

Post by SneakyPie » 18 Nov 2010, 13:35

These are the latest maps of Escapia updated daily

I've also added a google api map, so we have both: http://wokka.org/mine/

The other two maps will still be updated, I plan to put them together in an animation to show progress of the build. We have 2 maps that will updated about 10am GMT everyday.

The map will be always at http://wokka.org/mine/current.png

The server will also compare yesterdays map http://wokka.org/mine/previous.png to the current one and generate a map showing what has changed from yesterday to today: http://wokka.org/mine/changed.png

Many thanks Sneak. I really appreciate this.

Some of the stuff people are working on is....well, damn huge. I mean, look at those pyramids!

Could you please update the map and post it onthis forum every now and then? I'd really appreciate it.
My house= Outside east gate past Crossroads Mall. While not as impressive as some of the others, it's made out of OBSIDIAN.

Yeah with the way the world constantly changes and project jump ahead at record speeds. i think it would be good if we updated the maps once a week, if not once every couple of days.

Look gents, that is what DROPBOX is for

If you want constant map updates, and all that fun stuff, join up with that. This is just a general map to be used by players who don't want to join dropbox for constant updates, but at least an idea of what the town looks like.

The map in the dropbox hasn't been updated since the 10th. It's no better than the one in this thread.

I would LOVE another map! It's great to compare building progress as well, to see how much things have changed over several days (or two weeks...).

There are so many amazing creations I have to got to check out before the server is reset (if indeed it is going to be reset).

If we decide to wipe the server we should take periodical shots of it and make a time-lapse video of the first week.
I'd love to do that!

Ohhhh... That's where I left my first house.

That'll teach me to wander aimlessly for a few day/night cycles and decide that island is gonna be mine. I reset to spawn and never found it again...

Man, I didn't even get to see a tenth of the map. The farthest I got was the desert to the east of central. Never even went north or south.

I haven't used dropbox, but I think Black was uploading yesterdays map. The thing is, I can't auto-update dropbox, but I can the links above.

I have a script that runs the c10t program that generates the map code on linux, then I use imagemagick to render the changes image. Then script then copies the file over the the webserver. I keep the image names the same, so that the link is static now.

On my list of things to do is to generate thumbnails of each, plus long term, put each days image into a flash or animated gif to show a history of changes.

That part about the script copying the file over to the webserver. Can you make a script that copies the map into the "Latest Maps" folder in the Dropbox, as well? If you do that, the Dropbox will auto-update! Yay!

Also, the gif sounds awesome!

no, due to how dropbox makes you upload files via the web browser. I could probably hack something together and make it work, but its really not worth my time, you can simply use the links I have supplied.

converting the maps from RGB to 256bit indexed reduced the filesize by more than 50% for me, maybe something worth looking into? Also I didn't see any loss in quality.

Yeah, the map doesn't seem to use many different colors, so you may be able to reduce it to 16 or even 8 bit without too much quality loss...
