To see a prototype arena, go to X:1294 Z:633 in creative and look up!!

Summary:
Contestants have a maximum of one hour to complete a list of challenges inspired by the skyblock survival map challenges. The winner of the event is the player who completes all of the challenges first.
I will need an admin who likes the idea since this would probably need to be on the events server :3
Detailed Plan:
The arena would be set up into fifteen 50x50 (Big build sized) plots, each with the eponymous skyblock floating over either the void or a large enough drop to kill them. The contestants would be teleported onto their plot at the start of the event and then allowed to build for the event, completing the challenges (not necessarily in order) to gain points, or to complete the challenges. Once done, they would notify one of the judges, who would then inspect their build and cease the event if they had suceeded. Death during the event would be a disqualification/out of the event.

Contestants would need to register before the event and in case of no clear winner, judging would take place over a few days like the big builds.

Contents of the chest:
Spoiler! :
• 12x String
• 1x Bucket of lava
• 3x Bone
• 1x Sugar Cane
• 1x Red Mushroom
• 2x Ice Blocks
• 1x Pumpkin seeds

• 1x Melon Slice
• 1x Cactus

2) Make an infinite water source (1)
3) Obtain 5x Melons (2)
4) Obtain 10x Pumpkins(2)
5) Obtain 20x sugar cane(1)
6) Make a bed (3)
7) Make a giant red mushroom (1)
8) Make 20 torches (4)
9) Craft a furnace (3)
10) Collect 32 Bonemeal (4)
11) Make 10 Cactus Green dye (3)
12) Make 10 Mushroom stew (3)
13) Make 10 bookcases (4)
14) Make a bow and ten arrows(1)
15) Craft 30 stone slabs (5)

ADDING MORE CHALLENGES AT THE MOMENT

If there are any problems in this event, particularly with scoring or challenges, please tell me.
(I'm just getting a picture of the Skyblock and thanks to Minecraftforum's Noobcrew for the original skyblock)
EDIT: I would like to target this event towards GMT since that is where I am :) Also, I shall start making the map- would it be feasible to make one arena in creative and then copy that?

Yeah, that's what it's based off Vall.

I just changed the contents of the chest and some of the challenges since I thought that they would fit better in a race/timed environment, and some of them like "build a house" were too vague.

Also, fantastic Stealth :)

I don't think you gave them any saplings therefore making some of the challenges kinda impossible as you won't have any wood to build a bed etc. =]

Edit - Or do you start with the tree? Oops =P

There is a tree on the skyblock, Silva. They will need to conserve the saplings from that.

I can see why that could be a problem, but even then there is the added time pressure and tweaking of challenges etc.

EDIT: I've sent Seru this, and he said it seemed doable from a technical point (Not agreed to organise it though so still need to find an admin)

I like this idea as well and would definitely think about supporting it so long as it actually is technically possible. The only thing that worries me is the water and lava blocks. if people place that stuff and it flows on down and you multiple that by the amount of people playing it could cause some performance issues I think. Last time I did an event with those kinda of parameters the latency involved on the event server was causing some issues and the flowing lava and water blocks refused to go away after the source was removed.

Other than that I cant think of anything else to think of to add to how this event could be become a reality. More discussion would be good methinks :)

Alright, I did not consider that. However if the problem is the distance that it is flowing, would putting the map over the void but only five or so blocks up, since it cannot flow into the void. Also the event is not necessarily as large as previous events, with only 15 players max compared to, say, a big build. Lastly, I'd have thought that to complete the challengs they wouldn't want the liquids running off, but I can see why they might. Are the ways I've losted above solutions, or do we need to think of something else? :P

Or you could have them in a glass box, with about 30 blocks each way, to limit flow, but that might be more difficult to set up.

or you could place lava beneath them, not a drop all the way down, and that will get rid of the long lava falls etc.

Thanks Riff :)
Rob, I think your idea would be too constraining with regard to area to build in, and Silva, adding lava would kill them, but just stop the flow of water to the same degree as the void. Also, the lava would add light :/

Yeah a lava floor wont work cause the ice can be converted into water which can turn all that lava into obsidian.

I should also mention that for this event if we went though the trouble of making it work like the big build, where you can just click a sign to claim an area, that takes a long time to set up and is quite a pain in the butt. Besides we would still have to find a way to send people to that platforms out in the open and I cant imagine how well the whole falling = disqualification will go over with some players.

Also, you could probably trim the amount of challenges, probably like the infinite water and cobblestone generator since you kinda need those to do anything else. Also consider the challenges where you need the saplings from the tree leaves, as it is possible someone could have bad luck and not get a single sapling and therefore be unable to get more wood. Challenges like the melon/pumpkin/sugarcane farm will have be specific for what constitutes a "farm" and what doesn't. Mushroom growing can take time too and remember we dont want the competition running too long.

As well consider that mobs will probably be disabled to help with performance, as well you get better performance when its daytime versus night or a sealed area with no lights.

There is probably a few other things to consider as well but that's all I can think of at the moment.

With regards to teleport signs, they could probably be replaced by a yeleport from a mod. While perhaps tedious from a mod's perspective it would be less trouble to set up and due to limited player numbers, might not take too long, especially with multiple mods.
Falling should perhaps not equal disqualification, but the player will have lost their stuff due to the fall. If not disqualification, then they should get points for the completed challenges but no more.
Perhaps some saplings should be included in the chest, or at least the number of leaves on the tree made greater to the point where no saplings are dropped is a virtual impossibility (If they were to fail to get a sapling, one could be provided by a mod).

Agreed that some challenges could be stripped out to avoid making it easy, and will change farm ones to " grow x of y" so a definition for "farm" is not an issue. Mushrooms can be bonemealed and chopped down for small mushrooms.
Finally, there is the mobs/performance issue. I think that mobs are pretty much essential, so either the wvent could be set to night permanently or closed areas would be built for day. The only other alternative is spawned in mobs, but that defeats the object of building a place for them to spawn.
I think that the options are thus:

1) Go with poor performance (bad)
2) Lower the player and mob cap accordingly (not good but preferable to 1)
3) Spawn in mobs when players have proven themselves capable of building a spawn zone for them.
4) Rewrite most challenges to ones requiring no mobs (possible, will work on this later, and help would be appreciated- pm me if they need to be kept secret :P)

I think that's all that could be done, but please say if there are more :)
Edit: IDEA!
My idea to remove dependence on mobs is thus: small planetoids scattered vertically around the arena could contain items such as spider webs (either as blocks or items in chests) which would provide the necessary supplies. With the reduced mob lag, players could work in pairs, also eliminating the problem of a player's death.

The problem with planetoids around the arena, is first to get there could take it all and prevent the others from finishing that task.
The workaround to this would be to have your planetoids, and have the entire arena a resettable area. Each player goes in solo, with a mod or other designated person to do the timing. Then over a period of say, 48 hours each player attempts it, and fastest player wins. Would reduce the need for a set time, and such stopping players from being eliminated due to timezones, would reduce performance issues, as only 1 players work would be being done at a time, would prevent people watching others and stealing ideas ect..

I actually meant that each player/pair got their own set of planetoids, suspended above their own plot. In turn, this could also lead to an arena more interesting than floating walkways :)

Why not invent challenges for the adapted version of Skyblock
i.e. have an obby planetoid and some diams around in the other planetoids

Sounds good M4. If you leave ideas on the handy board in creative (Which M4 set up :D ), then we can start picking hem. I'm rebuilding the map on creative SP so that I can get the heights right, I'll put up the map on Mediafire or something.

EDIT: I've rebuilt the map in Creative SP so if you want to help test it PM me (If you test it you won't be able to participate ;) so preferably mods/admins who would be interested in helping run it. M4's been sent it since he's been helping an insane amount). It's a mediafire download so tell me if you have ethical dilemmas or something from using that and send me an alternative :P
